U.S. and BPPT Launch Two Early-Warning Tsunami Detection Buoys

Bahasa Indonesia

U.S. Ambassador Cameron R. Hume and Indonesian Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) Chairman Said Jenie launched two early-warning tsunami buoys at Tanjung Priok in North Jakarta. Officials from both governments witnessed the buoys deployed on the Baruna Jaya IV ship by large cranes.

“The U.S. Government values highly the clear and consistent commitment of the Government of Indonesia to a fully operational Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System and to leading by example in the Indian Ocean region,” Ambassador Hume said during remarks at the event. “This work is extremely important for ordinary Indonesians who live and work in tsunami-prone areas, and I want to express my sincere thanks to the many people and organizations in Indonesia and the U.S. who made this deployment a reality.”

The U.S. National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART) II buoys are part of a tsunami early-warning system of 22 deep-ocean buoys planned for deployment in the Indian Ocean. The DART II buoys, also known as a “tsunameters,” are being deployed in partnership with the Government of Indonesia. The Indonesian-built buoy integrated designs from several different countries, including U.S. DART II technology.

The launch of the two buoys reflects the scientific partnerships important to U.S.-Indonesian relations. The early warning system they are part of is designed to mitigate exposure to natural disasters in Indonesia, especially for residents along island coastlines. NOAA, which is the U.S. Government agency that monitors the condition of the atmosphere and oceans, is working with the U.S. private sector to reinforce establishing the early-warning system in Indonesia.
