U.S. EMBASSY CONDEMNS VIOLENCE AGAINST
PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATORS IN JAKARTA

Bahasa Indonesia

The U.S. Embassy Jakarta today issued the following statement:

The U.S. Embassy condemns the violence against peaceful demonstrators which took place June 1, 2008 at the National Monument (Monas) in Jakarta. This type of violent behavior has serious repercussions for freedom of religion and association in Indonesia, and raises security concerns.

We are concerned for those who are injured and wish them well in recovering from their injuries.

We welcome the statement by President Yudhoyono today for legal action against those responsible for this violence.

We urge the Government of Indonesia to continue to uphold freedom of religion for all its citizens as enshrined in the Indonesian Constitution.
