DPR Members Tour NAMRU-2 to See Facility’s Benefit A group of Indonesian members of Parliament toured NAMRU-2’s facilities and were able to ask its Indonesian and American staff questions. Arranged by the U.S. Embassy, the visit showed the parliamentarians how NAMRU-2 conducts research on naturally-occurring biological diseases and how it benefits Indonesia. “This tour was an opportunity to see how NAMRU-2 operates transparently, and as part of an agreement with the Indonesian Government,” U.S. Ambassador Cameron R. Hume, who was on hand to greet and brief the legislators said. “There has been a lot of discussion about NAMRU-2 in parliament, but this is the first time anyone from the DPR has been inside. Now they get to see first-hand what they have been discussing all this time.” This was the DPR’s first tour of the facility, although the U.S. Embassy has invited DPR members previously. Earlier this year, members of the Indonesian government’s inter-agency negotiating team visited NAMRU-2. Also, over 40 Indonesian and international journalists toured the facility, and journalists also toured NAMRU-2 in 2006. Co-located with the Ministry of Health, all of NAMRU-2’s research must be approved by the Ministry through LITBANGKES, and Ministry officials frequently visit NAMRU-2. Over the past decade, the findings from NAMRU-2’s research have been published in over 200 articles in scientific journals, both in Indonesia and internationally. Employing a highly-qualified staff of medical research professionals, NAMRU has 44 staff holding Sarjana (Bachelor’s Degrees), 7 with Master’s Degrees and 13 with Doctoral Degrees (MD, PhD or DVM). Americans and Indonesians work side-by-side at NAMRU-2, in some cases with Indonesian doctors directing the work of U.S. technicians and researchers. In addition to the regular full-time staff, NAMRU-2 annually trains approximately 35 Indonesian university students.
