This edition of eJournal USA presents descriptions of how several State Department offices and bureaus work together to accomplish the department's mission—"to create a more secure, democratic, and prosperous world for the benefit of the American people and the international community." The "regional" bureaus described in the September 2006 eJournal USA have responsibility for particular regions of the world; these "functional" bureaus have worldwide responsibility for particular issues. Thank you for your support--American Corners
in Yogyakarta Earthquake

Jakarta, June 13, 2006

Dear all,

We have received numerous e-mails expressing concern and support for our American Corners in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The American Corners send their heartfelt thanks for all your support and messages. We appreciate your attention and concerns in this horrific time of need. The healing and restoration process in the affected areas have been initiated by the local government and the U.S. government as well as other nations who are helping with the response for immediate humanitarian relief and long-term recovery and reconstruction efforts.

Both universities, Gadjah Mada University and Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta, have been temporary closed for cleaning and renovation and should be reopened this week. All activities in both American Corners are postponed until further notice, at least until the staff are back on their feet and ready to work again. Some of American Corner staff still live in a shelter, and the others stay with their relatives. As individuals, the staff and their family will require much patience, prayer, and concrete assistance in the months ahead. Although all of their personal belongings and assets were gone, in the aftermath of this terrible earthquake, they have experienced the most wonderful outpouring of love and support from all over the nation.

Once again, thank you for your support.
