U.S. and BPPT Launch Two Early-Warning Tsunami Detection Buoys
 

Jakarta, June 11 -- U.S. Ambassador Cameron R. Hume and Indonesian Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) Chairman Said Jenie launched two early-warning tsunami buoys at Tanjung Priok in North Jakarta. Officials from both governments witnessed the buoys deployed on the Baruna Jaya IV ship by large cranes. The DART II buoys, also known as a “tsunameters,” are being deployed in partnership with the Government of Indonesia. The Indonesian-built buoy integrated designs from several different countries, including U.S. DART II technology. (complete text)
 

U.S. and Indonesian Attorney Generals Sign Anti-Corruption Task Force Agreement

Jakarta, June 9 – U.S. Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey (left) and Indonesian Attorney General Hendarman Supandji (right) signed a $750,000 Letter of Agreement to establish an Anti-Corruption Task Force within the Indonesian Attorney General’s Office. U.S. Attorney General Mukasey is visiting Indonesia June 8 - 9 in order to meet with senior Indonesian officials regarding U.S.-Indonesia joint efforts to combat terrorism and trans-national crimes.

 


 


 




 


 



 





 





DPR Members Tour NAMRU-2 to See Facility’s Benefit

Jakarta, June 18 -- A group of Indonesian members of Parliament toured NAMRU-2’s facilities and were able to ask its Indonesian and American staff questions. Arranged by the U.S. Embassy, the visit showed the parliamentarians how NAMRU-2 conducts research on naturally-occurring biological diseases and how it benefits Indonesia. This was the DPR’s first tour of the facility, although the U.S. Embassy has invited DPR members previously.

U.S. Embassy Donates Books to Ministry of Administrative Reform

Jakarta, June 9 -- U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires John A. Heffern (left) presents a set of books on government reform to the Deputy to the Minister for State Administrative Reform for Administration Affairs, Dr. Asmawi Rewansyah, MSc. The U.S. Embassy donated 45 American books on governance and reform both in English and in Indonesian. The presentation was made during a recent meeting between several U.S. Embassy and Ministry officials.
